Manager, Tax Litigation

About this role

KPMG East Africa is seeking an experienced, highly motivated tax lawyer to join its Tanzania practice as Manager, Tax Litigation. The manager will lead tax dispute resolution and controversy work for KPMG clients, managing files from initial assessment through resolution and representing clients before revenue authorities and tax tribunals. Core responsibilities include preparing objections, appeals and representations; developing litigation strategies based on legislation, case law and practice; reviewing tax assessments and notices; advising clients on response strategies; and coordinating interaction with revenue authorities during audits, investigations and hearings. The role also involves liaising with tax advisory teams to align advisory positions with litigation strategy, providing clients with regular updates on case timelines and risks, maintaining complete case documentation, supporting internal quality reviews, contributing to proposals and business development, and producing thought leadership on tax controversy trends.

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Law from an accredited institution and be a registered Advocate in Tanzania, with at least five years of experience in tax litigation, tax controversy and tax audits, including demonstrated dealings with tax authorities, tribunals and courts. Strong legal research, analytical and drafting skills, excellent written and oral communication, stakeholder management, project management, team leadership and Microsoft Office proficiency are expected, along with high integrity and professional service commitment. A Master's degree or post-graduate diploma in taxation is an added advantage. KPMG is a global network of professional services firms providing audit, tax and advisory services; its East Africa practice covers Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, with Nairobi serving as the regional coordinating office.

This full-time managerial position is based in Tanzania and sits within KPMG's tax and regulatory services area.
