About this role
The United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) is seeking a Human Resources Intern to join its Human Resources Section in Arusha, Tanzania. The Mechanism was established to perform essential functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, maintaining the legacies of these pioneering ad hoc international criminal courts and reflecting best practices in international criminal justice. This unpaid internship is full-time, spanning three to six months with an intended start date of June 2025, and requires in-person presence at the Mechanism's Arusha duty station. Under the supervision of the Chief of the Human Resources Section, an Associate Human Resources Officer, or an assigned staff member, the intern will coordinate the Mechanism's Internship Programme.
Key responsibilities include serving as the focal point for all internal and external internship enquiries, drafting correspondence and managing telephone communications, preparing internship offer letters and following up on required documentation, informing departments of application statuses, delivering induction briefings to new interns, processing check-outs, and maintaining and updating databases. The intern will also support the Human Resources Section with ad-hoc duties as needed and foster smooth working relationships with candidates, fellow interns, and Mechanism staff. Applicants must be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a relevant first university degree programme at the minimum bachelor's level, or be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme at the master's level or equivalent or higher. Preferred areas of study include Human Resources, Administration, or closely related fields.
No professional work experience is required; however, field-of-study relevance to the internship is mandatory. Proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint, is required. Fluency in spoken and written English is essential, and knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. The internship is not financially remunerated.
