Grants Specialist

About this role

The Nature Conservancy seeks a Grants Specialist to administer publicly funded awards for the Lake Tanganyika Biodiversity Conservation Network for Nature, Communities, and Climate Resilience, known as LaTaBioCoN. The full-time post is based in Tabora, Tanzania, supporting a transboundary initiative led by TNC with partners across Tanzania, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Reporting to the Lead Grants Specialist for the Africa Business Unit, the specialist works closely with award managers, the Africa Region grants team, and the Grants Service Network. Core responsibilities cover the full award lifecycle, from pre-award through implementation and closeout.

The specialist reviews funder solicitations, proposals, and budgets; negotiates agreements and amendments; sets up agreements in TNC's finance system; checks financial data for accuracy and compliance; and maintains auditable files. The role also manages due diligence and administrative aspects of grants to grantee organisations, communicates with agency contracting officers, and ensures that programmatic commitments, TNC policies, financial standards, and legal requirements are met. The specialist provides support and training on public award administration. Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field, plus three years of related experience or an equivalent combination.

Candidates need experience with accounting and financial analysis, financial reporting systems, spreadsheets, general ledger reports, and financial management tools. Experience administering public awards under governmental, multilateral, and international regulations and standard contract clauses is required. Fluency in English and Kiswahili is necessary, along with willingness to travel to remote locations in Tanzania and the Lake Tanganyika region. A valid driver's license and compliance with TNC's Auto Safety Program are required.

Desirable qualifications include prior public award administration, non-profit accounting, multi-cultural experience, analytical and communication skills, and familiarity with EU, IKI, GIZ, USAID, or other major donor rules.
