About this role

Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is seeking a gardener to be stationed at its Ifakara office in Tanzania. The post holder will be responsible for keeping the assigned environment clean, offering administrative support, and contributing to the smooth running of daily operations. This is an internal advertisement, and current IHI staff members are encouraged to apply. Day-to-day duties include cleaning and maintaining the grounds, regularly cleaning buildings to keep them presentable, removing waste and taking it to designated bins, and maintaining office equipment.

The gardener will also provide general support to office staff as needed, attend administrative duty meetings, and perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor. Candidates should have completed primary, secondary, or vocational school and must be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Solid experience in gardening and landscaping is required, along with knowledge of workplace health and safety practices. The successful applicant will demonstrate teamwork and collaboration, time management, and communication skills, and must be fluent in Swahili, both written and verbal.

IHI is a leading research organization in Africa with a strong track record in developing, testing, and validating innovations for health. Its work spans biomedical and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research, service delivery, and policy translation, and this position supports the effective functioning of its office environment. The contract is full-time and based in Ifakara, with one position available. The gardener will take instructions from a supervisor and support office staff.
