The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is recruiting a Biodiversity Monitoring Manager to join its Greater Ruaha-Katavi Landscape Program in Tanzania. This full-time position is based in Mbeya and reports directly to the GRKLP Program Director, coordinating closely with the GIS Manager, Wildlife Corridors Coordinator, CMP Site Manager, and Law Enforcement Manager. The role also manages a team comprising a Carnivore Research Officer or Assistant and other Field Officers. The primary mandate of the Biodiversity Monitoring Manager is to lead landscape-level species, habitat, and ecological studies, assessments, and monitoring activities in alignment with WCS global conservation strategy.
Core responsibilities include designing and implementing monitoring activities across key areas and for key species, formulating conservation action plans and policies in collaboration with the government of Tanzania, IUCN, and specialist groups, and building broader awareness regarding the status and threats facing wildlife and wild places. The manager is responsible for survey preparation and design, ensuring statistical validity of methodologies, setting up data collection and management tools including data sheets and the SMART Survey model, and procuring all necessary field equipment such as research gear, communication tools, first aid supplies, and camping equipment for field technicians. The role also involves coordinating with government agencies including TAWIRI and other partners to manage landscape engagement and gather key information for ecosystem, species, habitat, and threat management.
