National Biodiversity Finance Consultant, Technical Assignment

UNDP

About this role

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Tanzania is seeking a qualified National Biodiversity Finance consultant to lead a focused technical assignment in Tanzania. This consultancy role involves providing specialized technical expertise on biodiversity finance mechanisms, instruments, and strategies that can support the conservation and sustainable use of Tanzania's rich biodiversity resources. The consultant will contribute to analytical work aimed at understanding current financial flows for biodiversity and identifying opportunities for improved resource mobilization. Core responsibilities include conducting technical assessments of biodiversity financing needs, developing recommendations for innovative financial instruments, and supporting the design of mechanisms that can channel resources toward conservation priorities.

The role requires a professional with an advanced academic degree in environmental economics, biodiversity conservation, finance, or a closely related field, complemented by substantial professional experience working on conservation finance or environmental economics in developing countries. Prior experience with international environmental finance frameworks, knowledge of Tanzanian environmental policy and institutional landscapes, and familiarity with UN or bilateral donor operational contexts are strong advantages. The consultancy will be undertaken within UNDP Tanzania's broader environmental and biodiversity programming, which links conservation outcomes with sustainable development financing. The assignment spans 30 working days, with the duty station in Tanzania and expectations for in-country travel as needed.

UNDP will engage the consultant on a fixed-fee or lumpsum basis in accordance with its consultancy fee guidelines. Applications must be submitted through the UNDP supplier portal no later than 31 July 2026, referencing UNDP-TZA-00413. Further clarifications may be requested via the portal messaging function, and queries can be directed to the contact person Severina Mwakiluma.
