UN Volunteer – Gender Mainstreaming Commissioner

About this role

The United Nations Volunteers programme is seeking an Online Volunteer to serve as a Gender Mainstreaming Commissioner with the Africa Child Foundation Mission of Tanzania, a registered organization that focuses on empowering communities and children through education, food provision, environmental conservation, and school uniform support. ACFMT is a member of ECOSOC and operates in partnership with organizations including Human Rights Defenders, AIDONIC, and Aramaic International Relief. This volunteer assignment focuses on integrating gender perspectives into biomedical engineering projects and health programmes to promote equitable access to healthcare technologies for women, men, girls, boys, and persons with disabilities. The commissioner will be responsible for conducting gender analyses to identify barriers to healthcare technology access, raising awareness about gender equality in science, technology, and healthcare, and collaborating with governments, NGOs, healthcare institutions, and research organizations to promote inclusive innovation.

Additional duties include monitoring and evaluating the gender impact of biomedical engineering initiatives and supporting capacity-building activities that empower women and girls to participate in STEM and biomedical engineering fields. Volunteers work with local health facilities, schools, youth groups, and community leaders to educate communities on diagnostic equipment, maternal health devices, assistive technologies, and digital health solutions. The preferred candidate holds an educational background in Biomedical Engineering, Health Sciences, Public Health, Engineering, Social Sciences, or a related field, with experience in community outreach, health promotion, or volunteer work being an advantage. Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills are essential, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic digital communication tools.

Fluency in English and Kiswahili is highly desirable. This is an unpaid online volunteer position requiring the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and adapt to challenging field conditions.
