Mining Technology Advisor
About this role
Cuso International is seeking a volunteer to serve as Mining Technology Advisor in Mwanza, Tanzania, with a planned start date of August 2026 and a placement duration of five months. The role is situated within the SHARE (Sharing Canadian Expertise for Inclusive Development and Gender Equality) project, working in partnership with SIDO (Small Industries Development Organisation). The advisor will play a pivotal role in empowering small and medium enterprises, small-scale miners, and artisanal mining communities in the Geita region by providing strategic technical guidance, facilitating access to cutting-edge mining technologies, and building local institutional capacity. Core responsibilities include conducting needs assessments among artisanal and small-scale mining operations, identifying and recommending appropriate technologies and innovations suited to the local context, collaborating closely with SIDO staff to strengthen their institutional capacity, establishing market and financial linkages between miners and relevant stakeholders, and designing and delivering training sessions and workshops on modern mining techniques, safety standards, and best practices.
The advisor will also champion sustainable and environmentally responsible mining methods that balance economic productivity with long-term ecological wellbeing. Essential qualifications include a university degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mineral Processing, or a closely related discipline, complemented by solid experience working directly with artisanal or small-scale mining communities. Candidates must demonstrate familiarity with current mining technologies and methods, background in capacity development or training facilitation, and strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication abilities. Previous experience in developing country contexts is considered advantageous.
As a Cuso International volunteer, the advisor will receive a comprehensive support package comprising a monthly living allowance, furnished accommodation, health insurance coverage including vaccinations and antimalarial prophylaxis, round-trip airfare, and coverage of work permit and visa costs. Pre-placement, in-country, and reintegration training will be provided alongside ongoing local support and access to an Employee Assistance Programme. Shortlisted candidates will undergo police checks, medical clearance, reference verification, and a language assessment before departure.
