Scriptwriter
About this role
Development Media International (DMI) is recruiting a Scriptwriter on a consultancy contract to write radio drama content for a health behaviour change campaign. The position reports to the Country Manager, offers a flexible start date, and pays a negotiable per-script fee. The posting lists the location as Tanzania, while the campaign described sits with DMI Zambia, which encourages couples to attend all antenatal and postnatal appointments and prompts parents to seek immediate treatment for childhood malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea. The scriptwriter collaborates with DMI's creative team to brainstorm, develop and refine script ideas that align with campaign themes and objectives, guided by a message brief.
The post-holder writes one-minute radio drama scripts that are concise, engaging and emotionally resonant for parents and caregivers of children aged 0 to 5. The work also involves incorporating pretesting feedback to maximise clarity and impact, and contributing creative ideas for integrating sound effects and music. Required qualifications include proven radio scriptwriting experience supported by a portfolio of engaging, memorable work, though less experienced writers will be considered where writing is of very high standard. Candidates must convey clear messages concisely and compellingly, and create relatable characters, vivid scenes and emotional connections using only dialogue and sound effects.
An understanding of local culture, particularly rural audiences, is essential, alongside a collaborative spirit and openness to feedback. Familiarity with maternal and child health topics is desirable. DMI designs media campaigns that change behaviours and save lives, working with partners including WHO, UNICEF and LSHTM on child survival, reproductive health, nutrition, hygiene and early childhood development. Its headquarters are in London, with a permanent presence in several African countries.
DMI applies a zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation and abuse, and successful candidates may undergo background and reference checks. Applications close on 30 October 2026.
