About this role

The United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) is recruiting a Legal Officer at the P3 level for its Arusha branch, located in the Office of the President. Under the supervision of the President and the Chef de Cabinet and Principal Legal Advisor, the incumbent provides specialized legal, policy, administrative and judicial advice on the President's mandated functions. Core responsibilities include drafting and reviewing orders, decisions, policies, practice directions, memoranda, reports, press releases, speeches, talking points and correspondence; conducting and supervising legal research in international humanitarian and criminal law; assisting the President in supervising sentence enforcement, detention conditions and independent inspections at both branches; supporting press and external relations; representing the President's Office in meetings and committees; and collecting and analyzing data to support decision-making through data visualization. Candidates require an advanced university degree in law, preferably with specialization in international, criminal, humanitarian or administrative law; a first-level degree plus two additional years of qualifying experience is accepted.

At least five years of progressively responsible legal experience is required, ideally in these legal fields. English and French are mandatory at UN Level II in all four skills. Desirable experience includes working with UN international criminal tribunals, detention and sentence enforcement matters, and two or more years in data analytics, along with completion of data analytics programmes. The IRMCT is a United Nations body; this temporary appointment is limited to the Mechanism and is available until 31 December 2026, with possible extension subject to budgetary approval.

Duty station is Arusha, Tanzania, with work spanning both branches of the Mechanism. Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview. Apply online through the UN Inspira portal.
