Translator and Interpreter Internship
About this role
The AfCFTA Secretariat is seeking applications for an Internship Programme in the role of Translator and Interpreter, based at the organisation's headquarters in Accra, Ghana. The African Continental Free Trade Area was established to create a single continental market across Africa, facilitating the free movement of goods, services, and people across member states. The Secretariat serves as the administrative and operational arm of the AfCFTA, managing the implementation of trade agreements, monitoring the adjustment fund, operating the AfCFTA e-Tariff Book, and coordinating dispute settlement mechanisms among state and non-state parties. As an intern in a translation and interpretation role, the selected candidate would support the Secretariat's multilingual communications across its five official languages, which include English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, and Swahili.
The intern would likely assist with written translation of documents, meeting interpretation, and ensuring linguistic consistency across the Secretariat's various directorates. Candidates should possess strong language proficiency in at least two of the five official African Union languages, with exceptional writing and comprehension skills in both source and target languages. Academic study in translation, interpretation, linguistics, international relations, or a related discipline at the undergraduate or graduate level is typically preferred for such positions. Prior experience with legal, trade, or diplomatic terminology is advantageous, as the intern would work with documents related to trade agreements, protocols, and operational instruments.
This is a fixed-term internship opportunity, with the precise duration, working hours, and stipend arrangements to be confirmed through the formal application process. The Secretariat operates within a fast-paced international environment, and interns gain exposure to continental trade policy, multilateral negotiations, and cross-cultural collaboration across 55 African Union member states. Interested candidates should apply through the AfCFTA careers portal, submitting their curriculum vitae and any relevant language certification or academic transcripts.
