Legal Affairs Intern, Office of the President

IRMCT

About this role

The United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) is seeking several legal interns for its Office of the President in Arusha, Tanzania. The anticipated start date is 3 August 2026 or later, and internships generally run between three and six months, with six months strongly encouraged to provide a more comprehensive experience. Candidates should specify their preferred internship period in their cover letter. Interns report to Legal Officers in the Office of the President and support a broad range of the President's mandated functions.

Core responsibilities include conducting comprehensive legal research, assisting in the drafting and proofreading of decisions, orders, and other judicial documents, preparing reports to the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly, analyzing relevant laws, rules, and policies, drafting speeches and official correspondence, providing support on press and policy matters, and assisting with the management, retention, and disposition of records. Candidates must, at the time of application, be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a university law-degree programme at minimum bachelor's level, or be law students enrolled in or completing a graduate programme at Master's level or equivalent. Prior professional work experience is not required, though the field of study must be closely related to the internship. Fluency in English is required and a working knowledge of French is desirable; knowledge of Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, or Kinyarwanda would be an advantage.

The internship is not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and all costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses remain the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution. Non-citizens or permanent residents of Tanzania may need to obtain appropriate visas and work authorization. All applications must be submitted through the United Nations Inspira portal. The UN does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
