About this role
KPMG East Africa is managing the recruitment of an Executive Director for a leading not-for-profit organization in Tanzania's health sector. The position is based in Dar es Salaam and reports to the Board of Directors, with responsibility for setting strategic direction, ensuring operational excellence, and delivering the mission and long-term objectives. The Executive Director will strengthen the organization's position as a centre of excellence in health programme implementation, policy advocacy, technical assistance, research, knowledge generation, and capacity building across Tanzania and the region. Core responsibilities include translating Board decisions into actionable strategies and operational plans, overseeing financial stewardship, and building a diversified funding base through grants, partnerships, and income-generating initiatives.
The post-holder will oversee the research and innovation agenda, drive digital transformation, and lead resource mobilization with donors, development partners, government, philanthropic institutions, and the private sector. People leadership involves developing the Senior Management Team and fostering an inclusive, high-performance culture, while governance duties include compliance with policies, statutory obligations, and risk management. The Executive Director will act as principal ambassador, building relationships with government, donors, academic institutions, and other stakeholders. Candidates must hold a Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Medicine, Life Sciences, Health Economics, or a related discipline, with a PhD as an added advantage.
At least fifteen years of progressively responsible leadership experience are required, five at executive level, preferably in public health. Demonstrated strength in governance, financial oversight, strategic partnerships, and fundraising is essential, along with strong understanding of Tanzania's health systems and experience with multilateral donors. This is a full-time position in Dar es Salaam; no salary details are stated.
