Economic Specialist

U.S. Mission Tanzania

About this role

The U.S. Mission in Tanzania is seeking an Economic Specialist to serve in its 15-person Political and Economic (P-E) Section at Embassy Dar es Salaam. This permanent, full-time position, graded LE-10, leads the embassy's work on understanding, analyzing, advising on, and reporting on a broad range of Tanzanian and regional economic issues, including investment, trade, mining and critical minerals, strategic competition, aviation, transportation, infrastructure, macroeconomic developments, and East African Community affairs. The specialist also supports portfolios related to energy, conservation, agriculture, tourism, environment, science, technology, and health as needed.

Working under an Economic Officer, the post-holder develops and maintains key contacts in government, the private sector, academia, international and multilateral institutions, and civil society, facilitating embassy engagement and official visits throughout Tanzania. Core duties are divided across five areas: contact development, communication and reporting, representational work and travel, advisory functions, and federal assistance and training exchanges. These include drafting diplomatic notes and briefing materials, maintaining biographic data on Tanzanian officials, interpreting at events, monitoring media and economic trends, preparing analytical cables and reports, planning high-level visits, advising the Front Office and Washington, serving as a Grants Officer Representative for economic development grants, and nominating participants for U.S. government exchange programmes.

The position is open to all interested applicants from all sources and is based in Dar es Salaam with occasional travel required. Telework is not available, and the role is not supervisory. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed. The appointment is permanent with a 40-hour work week, and a Public Trust background investigation is required.

The salary is TZS 77,198,751 per year, and the position offers promotion potential to LE-10. Applications are accepted through the U.S. Mission's vacancy system during the open period from 24 August to 7 September 2026.
