Public Health
Senior Program Manager
About this role
Jhpiego is recruiting a Senior Program Manager to lead field implementation of the AFGHS project, a U.S. Department of State funded initiative delivering maternal, newborn and child health and malaria services across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. The post-holder oversees the project's MNCH and malaria components, ensuring approved workplan activities, milestones and payment-linked deliverables become coordinated regional and council-level action. Reporting to the Senior Project Director, the post-holder works with Technical Directors, MEL staff and Field Team Leaders.
Day-to-day responsibilities include building integrated implementation schedules and deployment plans, coordinating field execution across supported regions, and ensuring field teams align with Regional and Council Health Management Teams. The role supervises Field Team Leaders and a Senior Program Officer and sets clear performance expectations. The post-holder also supports subgrant design, oversees subgrantee performance, and monitors milestone achievement using project and national routine data. Further duties cover coordination with government and Department of State partners and timely reporting.
Candidates must hold a Master's degree in public health, project management or a related field, with nine to ten years of experience overseeing multi-region field implementation or managing large-scale health programmes. Demonstrated experience with Ministries of Health, RHMTs, CHMTs and donor-funded partners is required, alongside strong coordination skills, fluency in Kiswahili and English, familiarity with DHIS2, eIDSR and eLMIS, and willingness to travel up to 40% across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Project management certification such as PMD Pro or PMP is an advantage, as is prior U.S. Government funded health programme experience.
Jhpiego is a Johns Hopkins University affiliate. The position is full time and based in Dar es Salaam, working closely with national health ministries. Jhpiego offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package, and successful candidates undergo a pre-employment background investigation. Applications go through the Jhpiego careers portal, and the position closes on 15 October 2026.
