Public Health
Advisor, Maternal and Newborn Health
About this role
Jhpiego is recruiting a Maternal and Newborn Health Advisor to provide technical and programmatic leadership for the AFGHS-Jhpiego project, a U.S. Department of State funded initiative delivering maternal, newborn and child health and malaria services in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. The post is based in Dar es Salaam on a full-time contract. The Advisor leads regional field implementation teams to scale up evidence-based MNH interventions at health facility and community levels.
Day to day this involves co-designing, coordinating and monitoring MNH activities with Government of Tanzania counterparts, including the Ministry of Health, PMO-RALG and Regional and Council Health Management Teams. The role provides technical oversight on quality improvement and capacity development, strengthens referral linkages across facility levels, and guides integration of MNH with HIV, malaria, immunization and nutrition services. The Advisor also tracks progress against work plans, milestones and payment-linked deliverables. Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree in public health, nursing, midwifery or medicine, with an advanced degree an advantage.
Candidates need six to seven years of experience in maternal and newborn health, at least two years as a classroom and clinical trainer and mentor, and experience designing capacity-building and quality improvement programmes with NGOs or the private sector. Preferred attributes include deep knowledge of antenatal, skilled delivery including emergency obstetric care, and postnatal care, strong data use skills and proven leadership. Fluency in written and spoken English is required, and Kiswahili proficiency is highly desirable. Jhpiego, a Johns Hopkins University affiliate, works with the Ministries of Health in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, the Reproductive and Child Health Section and national malaria programmes.
Reporting to the Project Technical Director, the Advisor must be willing to travel across programme regions. Jhpiego offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package. Applications in a single document are submitted via the Jhpiego careers portal by 19 October 2026.
