Roots & Shoots International Volunteer Placement

Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania

About this role

The Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania is recruiting an international volunteer for its Roots & Shoots programme, a global youth-led initiative that mobilises young people to take action for animals, people and the environment. The placement is an internship based in Tanzania for individuals seeking hands-on experience in conservation education and community-led action. Day to day, the volunteer supports the design and delivery of conservation education activities and compassionate action projects with schools and community groups. The placement strengthens management of the Roots & Shoots programme, including public communication and visibility work that raises the profile of youth-led conservation efforts.

The volunteer also supports monitoring and evaluation of the programme and contributes to impact reporting, helping the team capture and communicate results. Additional duties include event planning and outreach, along with other tasks agreed with the JGI Tanzania team. The programme does not involve direct interaction with animals such as chimpanzees. Applicants must be current or past members of Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots or another youth-led institute, hold a high school certificate or an undergraduate or graduate university degree, and be at least 18 years old.

They should be interested in the three core areas of Roots & Shoots, namely animals, environment and community, and be comfortable travelling to and working independently in remote rural areas. Proficiency in English or Kiswahili is required, and starting Kiswahili lessons before arrival is helpful. Good writing and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and experience organising workshops or training events are expected. Prior experience living or working in Africa or a developing country is a plus, as is flexibility and comfort using local transport such as daladalas.

Volunteers must adhere to JGI code of conduct policies, with all documents signed two weeks prior to arrival. Applications are submitted by email with a completed application form, a resumé or curriculum vitae, and a passport-style photograph.
