Operations & Finance
Resident Advisor, Monetary & FX Operations
About this role
The International Monetary Fund is recruiting a Resident Advisor on Monetary and Foreign Exchange Operations, based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, within the Fund's East Africa Regional Technical Assistance Center (AFRITAC East), which serves eight member countries and the East African Community. The assignment is a long-term expert contractual position with an initial twelve-month term and the possibility of extension, typically up to three to five years, subject to performance and funding availability. The post-holder leads and contributes to technical assistance and training for country officials across AFRITAC East member countries and at regional events. Day-to-day work covers central bank governance, accounting and financial reporting, communication and transparency, monetary policy implementation and domestic market operations, foreign exchange policy implementation, reserve management and FX market development, and liquidity backstops for financial stability.
The advisor prepares medium-term workplans with country authorities and IMF stakeholders, drafts annual assessments, handles the administrative side of TA delivery with headquarters backstoppers and partners, and organizes workshops and seminars regionally and in country. The advisor also liaises with MCM, other resident advisors and non-IMF capacity providers to avoid duplication. Candidates should preferably hold a graduate degree in economics, finance, accounting or a related field and have at least five years of central bank experience, with an in-depth understanding of international standards for monetary and foreign exchange market operations. Strong English drafting and communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, discretion in multicultural settings, willingness to travel significantly within the region, and proficiency in modern computer systems including AI are required.
Selection involves a written test and a panel interview. Technically the advisor reports to MCM's Central Bank Operations Division, and otherwise jointly to the Technical Assistance Strategy Division and the AFRITAC East Director. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. Applications close on 6 November 2026.
