National Consultant, Climate Education Curriculum

UNICEF

About this role

UNICEF Tanzania seeks a national consultant to develop a Gender-Responsive Climate Education Curricular Framework for primary and lower-secondary education levels. The consultancy will produce an aligned framework rooted in the Tanzanian National Curriculum while ensuring harmonisation with the existing Upper Secondary Framework developed by Room to Read, establishing continuity and coherence across the education system. The consultant will work closely with the Ministry of Education, curriculum agencies, and multi-stakeholder networks to integrate climate science, active pedagogy, and policy alignment into foundational education. Core responsibilities include conducting a thorough review of existing curriculum structures, designing age-appropriate climate education content, embedding gender-responsive principles throughout the framework, and facilitating consultations with education stakeholders to validate the framework’s relevance and applicability.

The role requires a master’s degree in Education, Curriculum Studies, Climate Change, Environmental Science, or a related field, with at least eight years of experience working in the Tanzania education sector and curriculum implementation. Candidates must demonstrate a minimum of five years specialising in climate education and curriculum development at primary and secondary levels, alongside a proven track record developing pedagogical resources and frameworks that merge climate science with teaching practice. Experience harmonising frameworks across education levels and collaborating with government ministries and curriculum bodies is essential. Fluency in both English and Swahili is required, and proficiency in another UN language or local language is an asset.

The consultancy spans five months, based in Dar es Salaam with travel as needed. UNICEF offers an attractive compensation and benefits package aligned with UN standards. Interested candidates should submit their application through the UNICEF Talent Management System, including an up-to-date profile, CV, cover letter, financial proposal using the provided template, and a detailed technical proposal expressing their interest. UNICEF does not charge any fees during its recruitment process and encourages applications from all qualified candidates, including those with disabilities, while maintaining a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with UN values.
