UN Volunteer Communications Officer

IOM

About this role

The UN National Volunteer Communications Officer will support communications, visibility, public information and knowledge management across IOM Tanzania's diverse programme portfolio. The role is based in Dar es Salaam and reports to the Head of Programmes, working closely with the Project Officer for Migration, Environment, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction as well as programme teams and regional communications colleagues. The post-holder will support the development and implementation of mission-level communications and visibility plans aligned with IOM standards, donor requirements and Country Office priorities, while providing dedicated communications support to the EU-funded RE2CLID (Regional Responses to Climate Displacement in Sub-Saharan Africa) programme that assists governments and communities in the Lake Tanganyika basin to address climate-induced displacement through resilience-building and community-driven solutions. Core responsibilities include drafting and coordinating high-quality communication products such as human-interest stories, web articles, press notes, social media content, newsletters and briefing materials, as well as supporting photography, videography, interviews and field documentation with attention to informed consent, protection-sensitive messaging and ethical content collection.

The post-holder will coordinate with programme teams, field staff, government counterparts and implementing partners to identify communication opportunities and ensure timely production of visibility materials, while maintaining content calendars, media monitoring systems and repositories of approved materials for reporting and coordination purposes. IOM Tanzania works with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, UN agencies, development partners and civil society to support safe and orderly migration, strengthen migration governance, enhance protection for vulnerable migrants and contribute to resilience and sustainable development priorities. The role requires a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in communications, media, public information or advocacy, preferably within humanitarian, development, migration or climate resilience programming, along with strong writing, editing, storytelling and digital communications skills and familiarity with UN communications standards and EU visibility requirements. Applications should be submitted through the designated portal by the stated closing date.
