Library Intern, Office of the Registrar
About this role
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) is recruiting a Library Intern for its Registry in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, for a two-month placement from 1 November to 31 December 2026. Based in the Mechanism's library, the intern works under the direct supervision of the Library Assistant and supports a collection focused on international law, international criminal law, genocide, and human rights. The library offers online public access catalogues, email document delivery, in-person reference services, and tailored research assistance. Core duties include circulation functions such as retrieving, checking out, discharging, and recalling materials.
The intern registers new materials in the library management system, performs cataloguing, assigns classification codes and call numbers, prints labels, and affixes them to items. They help visitors with information available in the library or through peer libraries, locate online journal articles, respond to reference queries, catalogue and index materials, and maintain the library system. The role also involves guiding users, providing tours, compiling daily news summaries, researching information for communications products, supporting public relations and protocol services, drafting social media messaging, and researching archival material for outreach. Applicants must be enrolled in or have completed the final year of a first university degree or a graduate programme.
Preferred fields include library and information science, programme information management, communication, journalism, or multimedia studies. Fluency in English is required; working knowledge of French, Kinyarwanda, or Kiswahili is desirable. The IRMCT was established by the UN Security Council in 2010 to carry out residual functions of the ICTR and ICTY. The Registry provides administrative, legal, policy, and diplomatic support.
The internship is unpaid; interns cover travel, visa, accommodation, and living costs, and there is no expectation of employment afterward. Applications go through the UN Inspira portal with transcripts or enrolment proof, and candidates should state their available start and end dates. No deadline is stated.
