Director, Sustainability and Transition
About this role
Jhpiego is recruiting a Director, Sustainability and Transition for the AFGHS-Jhpiego project, a U.S. Department of State funded initiative delivering maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and malaria services across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. The post is based in Dar es Salaam on a full-time local employment contract and reports to the Senior Project Director. The Director provides strategic and technical leadership for the design, implementation, monitoring and continuous refinement of the project's sustainability and transition approach.
Day-to-day work includes assessing institutional and system readiness with government counterparts, identifying barriers and risks to sustainability, and establishing transition priorities, pathways and milestones. The role leads development of a project-wide Sustainability and Transition Roadmap, supports the progressive transfer of leadership, management, supervision, monitoring and accountability functions to government structures, and conducts scenario planning and sustainability stress-testing. It also carries senior technical leadership in either malaria or MNCH, working alongside the Senior Project Director to give complementary oversight of both programme areas, while aligning activities with approved, payment-linked milestones. Required qualifications include a master's degree in public health, medicine, nursing, health systems management, health economics, public administration or a related field, plus at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in complex public health programmes, including donor-funded work in sub-Saharan Africa.
Candidates must show senior technical expertise in malaria or MNCH and experience in health systems strengthening, institutionalization, localization or transition management, including integrating donor-supported interventions into government policies, plans and budgets. Preferred additions include health financing or costing experience, management of payment-linked deliverables, fluency in Kiswahili, and prior work with Government of Tanzania institutions. Frequent travel across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar is expected. Jhpiego offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package.
Applications must be submitted through the Jhpiego careers portal as a single document combining cover letter, resume and references, and the position closes on 15 October 2026.
