Development Media International (DMI) is recruiting a Data Analytics Engineer to join its Tanzania country office, supporting the further development of the Tunza Afya Chat, a WhatsApp-based chatbot delivering child and maternal health information in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) Health Promotion Section. This permanent, full-time role is based in Mwanza, Tanzania, with remote working possible, and reports directly to the Country Director. The salary band is £24,000 to £26,000 per annum depending on experience, plus a 10 percent employer pension contribution and health insurance cover. Applications close on 5 July 2026.

Core responsibilities span three areas. On chatbot architecture and workflow management, the post holder will optimise WhatsApp message templates in line with Meta policies, capture and structure user profiles and health data, and diagnose and reduce user drop-off to improve retention and experience. On data engineering and analytics, the role involves designing and maintaining data pipelines from the WhatsApp API using BigQuery, SQL, and Looker Studio, tracking key user-chat metrics and KPIs through live dashboards, and proactively improving underlying data architecture. The post holder will also lead technical liaison with MOH ICT partners to prepare integration with national digital health platforms and the Afya Call Centre, collaborate with DMI UK teams to align data engineering with funder and strategic requirements, and draft technical scopes for potential AI-enabled chatbot features.

The required profile combines academic credentials in computer science, data science, public health informatics, or equivalent with at least four years of practical data engineering experience, ideally within digital health, and hands-on management of chatbot or messaging platform workflows. Proficiency in oral and written English and Swahili is mandatory, alongside demonstrated expertise in WhatsApp conversation logic, APIs, and webhook architectures, and strong skills in Python, SQL, and Google Cloud Platform tools such as BigQuery and Looker Studio.
