Biomedical Intern

Ifakara Health Institute

About this role

Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is recruiting a Biomedical Intern to be based at its Dar es Salaam office, working full time in support of the Newborn Essential Solutions and Technologies (NEST) programme. IHI is a leading African research organisation whose work spans biomedical and ecological sciences, health systems research, service delivery and policy translation. The NEST programme delivers comprehensive newborn care through innovative lifesaving technologies, technical and clinical capacity building, and a sustainable distribution network. The intern's day-to-day work centres on data collection, entry and quality assurance.

Each month the post-holder gathers preventive maintenance data from 22 health facilities, enters it into the RedCap system accurately and on time, checks completeness, produces summary reports and flags issues needing attention. On a quarterly cycle the intern updates the accessories, consumables and spare parts tracker, compiling data from all dispatched and distributed trackers and consolidating submissions. The role also involves monitoring the Hadli system's performance and downtime across facilities, documenting incidents, liaising with facility biomedical technicians on troubleshooting, following up resolutions and coordinating hardware replacement. Additional duties include developing job aids and training materials, compiling field reports and maintenance histories, collaborating with other programme tracks such as Data, Mentorship and CQI, and supporting periodic facility visits.

Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering and demonstrate data entry and basic data analysis skills in Excel and RedCap, problem-solving ability, attention to detail, report-writing and presentation skills, and Microsoft Office proficiency. The post requires managing competing priorities, working independently and in teams, coordinating with diverse stakeholders, and travelling within the country as needed. Familiarity with RedCap or similar data management systems and fluency in Swahili and English are desirable. An attractive competitive allowance package is offered per IHI allowance scales.

IHI is an equal opportunity employer and charges no fee at any stage of recruitment. Applications are made through IHI's recruitment portal.
