Android Developer Consultancy: In-App Plot Imaging
About this role
The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, part of CGIAR, seeks a senior Android developer for a three-month consultancy to build whole-plot image capture inside Ona, its digital phenotyping tool used by on-station breeding teams in Sub-Saharan Africa. Breeders currently leave Ona to shoot a panorama in the native camera and then link the image to the right plot, costing time, risking mismatched data and giving machine-learning models inconsistent input for counting plant stand, flowers and pods in common bean, cowpea and sorghum. The consultant will review the existing capture flow and earlier panorama attempts, prototype at least three approaches and recommend one on field evidence by the end of month one before building it into the app with linkage to plot registration and metadata. Options include in-app panorama with on-device stitching, guided multi-frame capture stitched in the cloud, short video sweeps, stitch-free counting and single wide shots.
The work covers performance comparisons, a beta build, one field validation round and handover of documented, tested code. The feature must work offline on mid- and low-range Android phones, cover a four-metre plot row in under 20 seconds and retain plot ID, timestamp, device and capture settings. Required qualifications are five or more years of native Android development in Kotlin, at least one shipped app with a custom CameraX or Camera2 feature, hands-on image stitching or computer vision work using OpenCV, homography or image registration, sensor-based capture guidance, performance tuning on low-end devices, offline-first background sync and fluent English. Desirable extras are server-side Python image processing, on-device machine learning, Android NDK experience and prior agricultural or Sub-Saharan field data work.
The consultancy is remote, reports to the Head of Product and works daily with Ona's Android and ML teams. Fees are paid in three instalments against deliverables, and applications close on 30 October 2026 through the Bioversity International jobs portal.
