Assistant Environment Officer, Kasulu, Tanzania
About this role

The position is funded under UNOPS terms as a Local Individual Contractor Agreement at grade LICA8, with a targeted start date of 1 July 2026. The role is embedded within UNHCR's environmental programming in Tanzania, which addresses the ecological impacts of large-scale refugee operations in camps and surrounding host communities. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting environmental assessments of UNHCR activities and partner operations, developing environmental action plans and mitigation strategies, and establishing monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track environmental conditions in and around refugee settlements. Core duties include applying integrated environmental management approaches across displacement and stable situations, working with communities and local partners to reduce pressure on natural resources, and supporting the adoption of sustainable practices within humanitarian programming. UNHCR requires candidates to hold a minimum of five years of professional experience in environmental assessment, planning, monitoring, and evaluation of integrated environmental programmes and projects. Practical experience with refugee-related environmental challenges is essential, as is familiarity with community-based and participatory approaches to environmental management. Desirable qualifications include knowledge of environmentally sustainable and appropriate technologies and renewable energy solutions applicable to humanitarian contexts. Kasulu District in western Tanzania hosts significant refugee populations from neighbouring countries, placing considerable pressure on local ecosystems and natural resources. The Assistant Environment Officer will play a critical role in ensuring that UNHCR's response is environmentally responsible and that local communities benefit from sustainable programming. Strong environmental assessment and monitoring skills are required, alongside the ability to work collaboratively across diverse stakeholder groups. The position is based in Kasulu, Tanzania, and does not involve remote work arrangements. No specific salary or benefits package is detailed in the vacancy notice. Applications must be submitted through UNHCR's official recruitment portal by the closing date of 27 May 2026.
