Public Health
Technical Director, MNCH
About this role
Jhpiego is recruiting a Technical Director for maternal, newborn and child health to lead the MNCH portfolio of the AFGHS-Jhpiego project, a U.S. Department of State funded initiative delivering lifesaving MNCH and malaria services across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Based in Dar es Salaam on a full-time local contract, the post-holder provides overall technical leadership, coordination and oversight of MNCH interventions, working alongside the project management team, the Senior Technical Team and Jhpiego's global technical colleagues. Day to day, the director sets technical direction for maternal and newborn health, child health, nutrition, immunization and integrated service delivery, ensuring alignment with national policies and global evidence.
The role leads implementation of quality improvement approaches, guides scale-up of evidence-based interventions, and strengthens government-led clinical training, mentorship, supportive supervision and health workforce development. The post-holder also works closely with MERL, community-based health services, malaria and field teams to ensure data are used for performance improvement, and represents the project in national technical working groups. Substantial responsibility sits with sustainability and transition, including institutionalizing effective interventions in government plans, budgets and systems. Applicants must hold an advanced degree in medicine, nursing, midwifery, public health, maternal and child health, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, nutrition or a related clinical or public health field, with at least nine to ten years of progressively responsible MNCH programming experience, including senior technical leadership of large-scale health programs.
Demonstrated expertise in quality improvement, competency-based training and health workforce development, experience working with Government of Tanzania institutions, and familiarity with U.S. Government donor compliance are required. Fluency in English is required; Kiswahili proficiency is strongly preferred, as is experience managing milestone-linked deliverables. Regular travel across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar is expected.
Jhpiego, a Johns Hopkins University affiliate, offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package. Applications, including cover letter, resume and references, are submitted through www.jhpiego.org/careers by 15 October 2026.
