Online Volunteer, Climate Misinformation Research
About this role
The UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Tanzania is recruiting an online volunteer to strengthen a joint UNRCO and UNEP assessment of climate misinformation and disinformation. The assignment supports a Technical Consultant leading behavioural science, narrative mapping and communication framework work, with the volunteer providing structured research, evidence gathering and analytical support. The objective is to synthesise evidence on climate misinformation with particular attention to Tanzania's policy, media, stakeholder and socio-economic context. UNRCO coordinates the UN Tanzania Country Team of 23 agencies, and UNEP Tanzania provides technical engagement on climate content, policy context and validation of narratives.
Day to day, the volunteer will conduct a structured desk review of digital and traditional media, policy documents and existing research, and compile evidence on the nature, channels, themes and prevalence of climate-related misinformation. They will support stakeholder and target-audience mapping, analyse findings to identify narrative patterns, information gaps and contextual factors, and prepare analytical notes and evidence tables. The volunteer will also help profile and validate potential trusted local messengers and consolidate findings into accessible reference materials for UNRCO and UNEP. The work runs over a strict 12-week timeline in three phases.
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in development studies, environmental studies, social sciences, economics, public policy or a related field, with a postgraduate qualification considered an asset. Demonstrated experience in desk research, literature or media review, qualitative or quantitative analysis and evidence synthesis is required, alongside strong analytical and writing skills in English and the ability to organise complex information into clear research notes and summaries. Preferred experience includes supporting stakeholder mapping, programme research, communications research or evidence-based development initiatives. Familiarity with Tanzania's development, environmental and climate policy context, media landscape, local institutions and civil society networks is a strong asset, and working knowledge of Kiswahili is advantageous.
The assignment is remote, and no salary, benefits or closing date are stated.
