Senior Programme Officer, Water and Sanitation

The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) is seeking a Senior Programme Officer, Water and Sanitation to provide technical leadership and strategic guidance for the Accelerating Access to Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme. The incumbent will lead policy reforms, systems strengthening, and service delivery performance improvements across participating African countries, ensuring alignment with regional frameworks and international best practices. Core responsibilities include managing and overseeing technical assistance programmes, coordinating with multilateral development partners, and supporting institutional capacity development across member states. The role requires a Master's degree in Engineering, Water Resources Management, Public Health, or Environmental Science with a minimum of seven years of progressive experience, of which three years should be in a supervisory role within a WASH-related organisation.

Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in the same disciplines with ten years of progressive experience will be considered. Essential skills include proficiency in MS Office, SAP ERP and STEP, excellent communication and writing abilities, strong analytical and organisational capabilities, and the capacity to work under pressure with minimal supervision. Prior experience in regional WASH policy reform and governance strengthening, sector performance monitoring, and engagement with institutions such as the World Bank is highly desirable. AUDA-NEPAD is the African Union's specialised development agency mandated to catalyse continental transformation through coordination of the Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The WASH programme falls under the Human Capital and Institutions Development thematic priority. The position is based in Midrand, South Africa, on a full-time contract with expectations for regional travel. 68 per annum, and a gratuity of 15 percent of gross salary.
