About this role

The Ifakara Health Institute is seeking a Research Scientist to join the Transmission Zero Project, a flagship malaria research initiative based in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. This project represents a significant investment in advanced scientific research aimed at controlling and eliminating malaria across Africa through cutting-edge genomics and transgenesis approaches. The role is offered on a full-time basis and is based in Bagamoyo, with the successful candidate working primarily within a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory environment designed for work involving high-risk biological agents. The Research Scientist will support advanced molecular biology and transgenesis research activities, focusing on the development and application of innovative tools for malaria control.

Core responsibilities include conducting molecular biology experiments and procedures within the BSL-3 facility, maintaining compliance with strict laboratory safety protocols and procedures, assisting with the design and implementation of genomics research protocols, and contributing to data analysis and interpretation of research findings. The scientist will collaborate closely with other researchers and laboratory staff on various aspects of the project, ensuring that all activities align with the project scientific objectives and ethical standards. Applicants must hold a Masters degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Parasitology, or a related scientific field. Strong knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and molecular biology research practices is required.

Preferred qualifications include hands-on experience and a solid background in molecular biology and parasitology techniques, which will be considered a significant advantage during the selection process. The Ifakara Health Institute is a leading Tanzanian research organization dedicated to improving public health through rigorous scientific research, training, and service delivery. The Transmission Zero Project sits within the institute broader portfolio of malaria research activities, contributing to regional and continental efforts to combat this disease.
