Public Health
Research Officer – Transmission Zero Project
About this role
Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is seeking highly motivated and skilled graduates to join the Transmission Zero Project as Research Officers on a contract basis. The positions are based at IHI's facility in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, and are designed to support genomics and transgenesis research activities aimed at advancing malaria control and elimination efforts across Tanzania and the broader African continent. The project sits within IHI's broader portfolio of public health research, contributing to efforts to reduce and ultimately interrupt malaria transmission through scientific innovation. The successful candidates will primarily support laboratory-based transgenesis research activities within a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory environment.
This involves ensuring strict compliance with safety protocols, maintaining rigorous laboratory procedures, and working with specialised equipment and techniques associated with high-containment research settings. Candidates will contribute to the day-to-day execution of research protocols, assist with sample processing and analysis, and support the documentation and reporting of experimental findings within the transgenesis workflow. Applicants must hold a science-related degree, with a preference for candidates whose academic background is in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a closely related field. A minimum of one year of prior experience in a similar research environment is required, and hands-on experience in molecular biology and parasitology techniques will be considered a significant advantage during the selection process.
This is a full-time position on a contract basis, based in Bagamoyo. The role involves working within a BSL-3 laboratory, which requires adherence to strict biosafety standards and protocols. IHI operates as a leading health research institution in Tanzania, with multiple branch offices and a strong reputation for conducting impactful public health research across East Africa. Specific salary or benefits details are not stated in the source.
Applications should be submitted online through the Ifakara Health Institute Recruitment Portal by 16:30 hours on Saturday, 6 June 2026.
