Project Officer-Pemba

Aga Khan Foundation

About this role

The Madrasa Early Childhood Programme (MECP), an affiliate of the Aga Khan Foundation, seeks a Project Officer to support early childhood development programming in Pemba, Tanzania. MECP was established in East Africa in the 1980s to improve access to and quality of early childhood care and services in marginalized coastal communities across Kenya, Zanzibar, and Uganda. As a locally rooted entity operating with entirely local staff, MECP has spent four decades championing affordable, high-quality ECD interventions for children aged 0 to 8 years. The organisation works with governments and key stakeholders to deliver programmes that support front-line education and health workers while influencing ECD policy and practice, including quality teacher training.

To date, MECP has trained over 8,000 teachers and reached more than 1 million children across its programme areas. In this role, the Project Officer will be responsible for supporting the effective implementation of MECP activities in Pemba, including programme delivery, monitoring progress, and ensuring quality standards. The post holder will work closely with government partners, community stakeholders, and front-line workers to support training and capacity development initiatives. Coordination with programme staff and partners to ensure smooth implementation of ECD activities will be a key function of this position.

Candidates should possess relevant academic qualifications in early childhood development, education, or a related field, along with experience in programme coordination and implementation within the development or education sector. Strong skills in stakeholder engagement, communication, and community participation are essential. Prior experience working with government partners and understanding of early childhood development systems strengthening would be advantageous. This is a full-time position based in Pemba, Tanzania, within MECP's East Africa programme portfolio.

The role offers an opportunity to contribute to high-impact ECD work that has already produced measurable outcomes for children and communities across the region. Applications close on 1 July 2026 and should be submitted through the Aga Khan Foundation's official recruitment channels.
