About this role
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is recruiting a Programme Officer to support crop production, productivity and competitiveness across its sixteen-member region. Based at SADC Headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana, this role sits within the broader SADC Secretariat structure and reports to a supervising officer as assigned. The Programme Officer will facilitate and coordinate policy development, strategic planning, programming and monitoring and evaluation activities aimed at strengthening regional crop production systems. Core responsibilities include drafting annual calendars of events, coordinating the harmonisation of policies, strategies, regulations and standards in crop production, reviewing and developing relevant protocols, overseeing capacity-building initiatives focused on agro-industry, value addition and post-harvest management, and managing the design and implementation of programmes targeting crop and pest disease control and the promotion of regional agro-business value chains.
The officer will also oversee procurement of consultancies, monitor programme implementation, prepare M&E reports, and maintain a regional crop production database. Stakeholder engagement, networking with Member States, and presenting to various audiences on crop production issues are integral to the role. Minimum qualifications include a Master's degree in Crop Science or a related technical field from a recognised institution, proficiency in computer software, and at least seven years of relevant experience within a public or private sector, regional or international organisation. Strong communication, negotiation, analytical and organisational skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and thrive in a multi-cultural, politically complex environment.
The position is offered on a fixed-term contract for four years, renewable twice subject to satisfactory performance and probation completion. It is classified at Job Grade 6 with a salary range of approximately US$72,589 to US$77,084 per annum. The role is open to nationals from eligible SADC Member States including Tanzania, and applications submitted through SADC National Contact Points must be received no later than 5 June 2026.
