Grievance Redress Mechanism Officer
About this role
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is recruiting a Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) Officer for its Greater Ruaha-Katavi Landscape Programme in Mbeya, Tanzania. This full-time, field-based role will support the implementation of a comprehensive social safeguards programme designed to protect and respect the rights of local communities residing near conservation areas. The GRM Officer will be responsible for receiving, logging, tracking, and categorising concerns, complaints, suggestions, and grievances submitted through the mechanism, ensuring each is processed in accordance with established GRM procedures. The post-holder will manage the Asana grievance redress database, scrutinise and analyse incoming grievances to determine eligibility, and refer appropriate cases to Reserve management for resolution.
Sourcing supplementary information from relevant parties to facilitate thorough understanding of complex grievances and maintain confidentiality throughout the process will be essential. The Officer will advise programme leadership on proposed solutions and timelines, contributing to consensus-building around dispute resolution. The role requires a university degree in a relevant discipline such as law, social sciences, or development studies, alongside demonstrated experience working with community grievance mechanisms or social safeguards frameworks. Familiarity with Tanzanian legal and regulatory environments and prior experience with database management are advantageous.
The position is based on-site in Mbeya with travel to surrounding project villages as required, reporting to the GRKLP Director and the Matrix Regional Social Safeguard Coordinator. WCS is a globally recognised conservation organisation operating across more than 60 countries, with a long-standing presence in Tanzania focused on landscape-level wildlife and habitat protection. Applications must be submitted through the WCS online recruitment portal by 17 August 2026.
