About this role

The U.S. Mission in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania is hiring a part-time Consular Associate to support the work of the Consular Section, reporting directly to the Consular Chief. The position is open only to U.S. Citizen Eligible Family Members (USEFMs) of all agencies.

The post-holder will spend roughly 70 percent of time in the American Citizen Services unit, scheduling appointments, explaining documentary and procedural requirements to U.S. citizens, and supporting services such as voting outreach, financial and medical assistance, Consular Reports of Birth and Death Abroad, routine prison visits, and welfare, destitution, repatriation, and injury cases. When designated, the associate serves as a Passport Acceptance Agent and as a Notary Public, receiving applications and administering oaths. A further 10 percent of duties involve nonimmigrant and immigrant visa processing, including biometric data collection, pre-screening and quality control, ineligibility searches, drafting background check requests and Security Advisory Opinions, and monitoring expedite queues and visa wait times in the appointment system.

Another 10 percent focuses on fraud prevention, including validation studies, site visits, and facilitating DNA testing, while the final 10 percent covers correspondence, training and customer service initiatives, outreach, and operational improvement projects. Candidates must be able to obtain and hold a Secret security clearance, pass a background investigation, and begin work within four weeks of agency authorization. The appointment is permanent but definite, not to exceed five years, at the FP-3090, grade 6 level, with an annual salary of USD 59,726, and requires 20 hours of work per week. Telework is not available, relocation expenses are not reimbursed, and occasional travel may be required.
