About this role

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) seeks a Carnivore Research Assistant to support carnivore research and monitoring activities within the Greater Ruaha-Katavi Landscape Program in Tanzania. This temporary position plays a critical role in advancing WCS's mission to save wildlife and wild places through field-based data collection, spoor and camera trapping surveys, and the implementation of carnivore monitoring protocols in remote and challenging environments. The Carnivore Research Assistant will conduct fieldwork across the landscape, tracking carnivores and identifying spoor and other wildlife signs, while deploying, maintaining, and retrieving camera traps and other field equipment. The role involves collecting accurate ecological and field data following established survey protocols and capturing high-quality wildlife and field photographs for documentation and reporting purposes.

Additionally, the position supports the establishment and day-to-day operation of remote field camps, ensuring effective management of field logistics including oversight of equipment inventories, food supplies, and basic health and safety provisions. The Carnivore Research Assistant will organize and maintain field equipment, supplies, and survey data, contribute to field reporting, and ensure adherence to field safety procedures. The minimum requirement is a Bachelor's degree in wildlife management or related studies combined with at least two years of experience working in a remote field environment. Preferred qualifications include additional training in ecological research methods and experience with carnivore identification techniques.
