About this role

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is seeking an Associate WASH Officer on a temporary appointment basis to support the implementation of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Project FP218: Building Climate Resilience in the Landscapes of Kigoma Region, Tanzania. The project is being implemented jointly by UNHCR and the Vice President's Office (VPO) as Executing Entities, under the overall supervision of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as the Accredited Entity, and will run over a five-year period from 2024 to 2029. The incumbent will be based in Kasulu, Tanzania, and will serve as the National Water Officer supporting the GCF project's water-related and ecosystem restoration interventions across Kakonko, Kasulu, and Kibondo districts.

The primary responsibilities include providing specialised technical expertise to plan, coordinate, supervise, and monitor water infrastructure interventions, overseeing engineering activities aimed at reducing soil erosion and flood risks, supporting stakeholder engagement and land-use planning processes, and preparing technical specifications and Bills of Quantities. S/he will provide technical oversight for water harvesting, irrigation, and watershed management infrastructure while coordinating with multiple government counterparts, implementing partners, contractors, and project stakeholders. The role requires a minimum of three years of relevant experience with an undergraduate degree, or two years with a graduate degree, in fields such as civil engineering, hydrology, water resources development, public health engineering, or environmental engineering.

Essential competencies include proven expertise in WASH programme implementation, monitoring and evaluation, data management, coordination, and the ability to handle competing priorities in a fast-changing environment. UNHCR offers compensation in line with the UN salary scales for NOB grade positions, including hardship level and family allowances where applicable.
