Anticipatory Action Field Assistant

WFP

About this role

WFP is seeking a community United Nations Volunteer for a 12-month assignment to support the operational roll-out and readiness activities of an Anticipatory Action project in Simanjiro District, located in the Arusha region of Tanzania. The position is part of WFP's engagement with government counterparts and partners to institutionalise Anticipatory Action and strengthen national systems for climate and Disaster Risk Management. The UNV will provide critical on-the-ground support to ensure effective engagement with local authorities, communities, and partners during the start-up phase of this initiative, which aims to reduce the impact of climate extremes on vulnerable communities by integrating climate science and services into disaster risk management and humanitarian response systems. The UNV will support operational roll-out and readiness activities of the Anticipatory Action project, facilitate coordination and engagement with district authorities, line departments, community leaders, and local stakeholders, and assist in collecting, verifying, and documenting baseline and operational data relevant to AA triggers and early actions. They will coordinate community sensitisation efforts and help organise district-level meetings, trainings, and field activities while monitoring implementation progress and identifying operational challenges. Since WFP has no presence in this region, the UNV will be based in Simanjiro and work in close coordination with Arusha focal points, reporting to the Anticipatory Action Programme Lead. The role requires at least two years of relevant experience in community-based projects, disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, or humanitarian programmes, along with experience working with local government authorities and communities. Strong communication, coordination, and reporting skills are essential, alongside a good understanding of the district context. Preferred qualities include knowledge of early warning, early action, or climate-related interventions, strong interpersonal and community engagement skills, the ability to work independently in remote settings, flexibility to travel frequently, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to UN values and humanitarian principles. This United Nations Volunteers assignment is hosted by WFP in the United Republic of Tanzania.
